"God is dead," prefers to the death of the control God had in Europe via religion. Nietzsche does not believe in a supreme being and could care less about God being dead. He prefers solely to binds of religion on man. Once man can free himself from those binds of religion and government, both of which man created for himself, he can then be able to create a new moral system and thus usher in the Overman. And he was also well aware of Buddhism, we has an entire "sermon" dedicated to those "weary preachers of death, that they might take their own advice and die themselves" in his book Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
